Torn
The piece is about the instinct to bleed away from comfort. You are wounded - the blood in the snow is undeniable, visceral, you can't hide that you're hurt. You stumble and you do find shelter. You find the hallway, you find the light, you find the door. For a moment, there is comfort available. It's right there. But you don't open it. To open the door would mean to be seen wounded. It would mean asking, explaining, being vulnerable inside a warm room when you have learned to survive in the cold. So you turn your back on the very thing that could help you. You choose the familiarity of the cold, the long dark hall you already know, over the uncertainty of what is behind the door. It's self-preservation that looks like self-punishment. You avoid shelter not because you don't need it, but because needing it feels more dangerous than continuing to bleed. The comfort exists, but you convince yourself you haven't earned it, or that it won't be there when you reach for it. The painting leaves you in that moment of choice - the footprints going the wrong way.
