Refuge
At first glance, it's a quiet night scene - But the quiet is unsettling. This is a painting about desperately seeking safety where safety doesn't exist. The viewer is placed at the start of the path. The grass is overgrown and wild, the night is vast, and there is only one direction to go: forward. But none of the buildings offer refuge. The red house, which should be the warmest and safest- but it’s void. The chimney stands but there is no smoke, no sign of life. It's a shell of a home. Your options surrounding this house are not optimal. Cold, institutional, incomplete. The red path, It's too bright. Almost like a wound in the green, and it doesn't meander - it pulls you urgently, desperately, to the one door that is clearly unsafe. It’s the path of someone who has no other choice. You have to go inside, even though every instinct says not to. This painting captures that specific feeling of exhaustion: when you are so desperate for shelter, for rest, for a place to belong, that you keep returning to places and people you know cannot keep you safe, because the alternative is being alone in the dark field under the stars. The stars are beautiful but distant and indifferent. They offer no help. It's about homelessness in the emotional sense - having houses around you, but having no home.
