Survivors of The Storm

A large 18th century French maritime scene depicting the aftermath of a violent shipwreck, oil on canvas. Beneath a turbulent sky and towering waves, survivors cling desperately to the rocks, attempting to recover a lifeboat, while a solitary figure appears to pray for salvation. A dramatic and finely executed composition characteristic of Vernet’s celebrated storm scenes. Signed “J. Vernet 1776” lower right and attributed to Joseph Vernet. Presented in a gilt frame and in excellent overall condition.
